A flipping good afternoon at St Giles'

nickandyvonne

Also known as Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday fell on 4th March this year.  It comes from the word ‘shrive’, meaning absolution following confession.  It is the day before Lent, traditionally a 40 day period of fasting to mark the 40 days that Christ fasted in the desert.

Nowadays, regardless of whether we plan to fast or give up certain food extravagances, this is a day when pancakes are flipped and consumed in large quantities, smothered in chocolate sauce, or lemon and sugar or even (a very popular choice) Cointreau!  Daphne and Caroline did a sterling job of providing scores of pancakes for peckish villagers and the children from Wishford school, who came over after their pancake races to eat the real thing.  It was a joyfully indulgent event and we are very grateful to Daphs, Caroline, Jamie and all who mucked in to help - thank you!
